Villanova loses starting defensive end

09/06/2010 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Defending FCS national champion Villanova has lost sophomore Marlon Johnson, its only returning starter on the defensive line, to a season-ending ACL injury.

Johnson, a defensive end, suffered the injury during last Friday's 31-24, season-opening loss to Temple.

"He's done for the year, which is tough for us because we're going to have to play some really young people in the defensive front," said Wildcats head coach Andy Talley, whose defense uses a 3-3-5 alignment.

The 6-foot-2, 255-pound Johnson started all 15 games in 2009 and finished with 26 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Johnson's injury should increase the playing time of redshirt freshman Rakim Cox, who had three tackles, including a sack, against Temple.

Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
